Lime plaster is the thing – it is ideal for humid environments and, in the right artisan’s hands, it can be nothing short of gorgeous. What’s more? Tadelakt is all the rage in the world of lime plaster these days. What is tadelakt? It is a millennium-old traditional Moroccan plaster. Originally used for things such as baths and sinks. It is exceptionally functional. It is water repellant, mold and mildew resistant, and breathable.
Another example of an all-over tadelakt plaster finish in a residential bathroom in New Orleans. You can see the wet application in the shower – this special plaster is water and mold resistant – as well as the dry application outside the shower. Different numbers of coats and impeccable timing are required to not only effectively make the plaster moisture resistant but also to properly match the look, feel, and color across both the wet and dry applications.
Beyond its functionality – ideal for use on bathroom walls and ceilings, showers, backsplashes, outdoor kitchens, pool houses, and more – it can also be something special aesthetically. It delivers lovely and subtle textures with natural, silky movement and tremendous depth.
However, you can’t just hire your local “stucco and plaster guy” or just any decorative artist, for that matter, to handle a specialized product like this. It takes a highly skilled artisan to properly apply tadelakt. It requires a precise handcrafted application to ensure not only its functionality, but also to achieve a striking mottled and organic looking finish.
Tadelakt can be used in wet and dry applications. For example, it’s ideal for an all-over bathroom – the shower and sink (wet application) and walls and ceiling (dry application.)
Each application requires a different number of coats and the timing and skill to make it both functional and beautiful is critical. It is also great for curves and tight corners. In the right hands, it delivers a seamless look, even across the wet and dry applications.
With tadelakt, lime plaster is used along with soap from olive and coconut oils, which protects and seals, and, also, sand from marble or limestone as an aggregate. A big plus that tadelakt brings to the table is that it is breathable, hypoallergenic, and eco-friendly.

We did a dry application on the walls and vanity, including on a significant number of curved areas. What’s more? A custom tub/shower was built with a surround. This was a wet application of tadelakt and is a fabulous showstopper in the space. The entire space boasts a seamless, uniform application across both the wet and dry applications of the plaster as well as on all the varying surfaces. The plaster color is also a custom mix we provided. We capped it off with a custom stencil on the archway that complements the pattern found on the antique floor tile.

Now, here’s a stairwell you’d want to go up and down! Tadelakt plaster, a traditional Moroccan technique, is so versatile! It can be used in wet areas (like walk-in showers) as well as dry areas (walls, ceilings.) Here, as part of a residential renovation in Baton Rouge, we applied a beautiful, custom colored tadelakt plaster finish on the stairwell’s wainscoting in its upper portion and then on both sides of its solid half-wall. The stairwell comes dramatically into view from the home’s foyer, open kitchen, and living room. Also note, in some of the pictures, you can see the plaster in the upper areas is yet to dry into its finished look, as seen the in the lower area/half-wall views. Ultimately, the look is creamy, organic, and boasts a subtle lushness unique to tadelakt! Special bonus – don’t miss the amazing scalloped fireplace surround we delivered using a stunning stone plaster finish!

Here, as part of a residential renovation in Baton Rouge, we applied a beautiful, custom colored tadelakt plaster finish on the stairwell’s wainscoting in its upper portion and then on both sides of its solid half-wall. The stairwell comes dramatically into view from the home’s foyer, open kitchen, and living room. Also note, in some of the pictures, you can see the plaster in the upper areas is yet to dry into its finished look, as seen the in the lower area/half-wall views. Ultimately, the look is creamy, organic, and boasts a subtle lushness unique to tadelakt! Here’s a terrific recent example showing both the functionality and beauty of our tadelakt plaster work! We applied the plaster all over the bathroom of a residential pool house in the Lakeview area of New Orleans. It’s both the wet application (shower walls and floor) and the dry application (bathroom walls and the entire ceiling.) Each application requires a different approach, utilizing a different number of coats. It also takes skilled and disciplined timing to ensure the wet application is water and mold resistant as well as making sure both applications match, looking seamless across the entire space. The natural, organic, and silky look of the plaster compliments the reclaimed wood features of the bathroom.

Here’s a terrific recent example showing both the functionality and beauty of our tadelakt plaster work! Tadelakt is the lime plaster you should know! It is ideal for both wet and dry applications – showers, bathrooms, backsplashes, outdoor kitchens, and much more. But, this traditional Moroccan plaster takes a great deal of skill to deliver – ensuring that it is both functional (water repellant) and beautiful. Timing in the multi-coat process is critical. It takes the hands of a true artisan to execute this special plaster finish. Here, you can see our finished basecoat for a wet application in a shower – a heavy aggregate plaster that must be properly compressed and smoothed at the right time, not too wet or too dry. This gives us the proper texture needed to setup the multiple coats of tadelakt that then create a beautiful, organic looking plaster finish. Yesterday, we had the great pleasure of spending our morning at a Vieux Carré Commission Foundation seminar on preservation featuring several New Orleans master craftsmen. One of them was master plasterer Jeff Poree. He has graciously spent time sharing his knowledge and experience with me as well as working on projects together. He is a fifth generation plasterer with knowledge and skill that has been passed down over those generations. He, like his antecedents, has worked on countless historical structures in the city. To this day, he carries on the tradition of working to restore and preserve our architectural heritage.

Yesterday, we had the great pleasure of spending our morning at a Vieux Carré Commission Foundation seminar on preservation featuring several New Orleans master craftsmen.
